# Be Hard to Hack, NWA: October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month

There are no decorations or songs or celebrations. No outfits to wear; no special dishes to feast on.
But when you work in IT and cybersecurity, it's a pretty big calendar event nonetheless.
Frankly, given present trends, it really *should* be a big occasion for every business.
I'm talking about Cybersecurity Awareness Month. Observed every October for the last 22 years.
Back in 2004, the National Cybersecurity Alliance, along with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, decided that cybersecurity could no longer be the purview of just corporate IT departments. It needed to become everyone's priority.
Especially businesses, with so much to lose in the way of assets, reputation, and operational activity.
[As the NCA website says](https://www.staysafeonline.org/cybersecurity-awareness-month):
> *That is why Cybersecurity Awareness Month continues to emphasize practical behaviors that can make a meaningful difference...\[They\] may seem like small actions. When millions of people and organizations adopt those habits, however, those actions collectively make society harder for cybercriminals to exploit.*
Thus, Cybersecurity Awareness Month was born.
A chance for everyone from governmental agencies to your friendly neighborhood MSP (that's us) to emphasize basic cybersecurity protections.

What?! You haven't hung a Cybersecurity Awareness Month wreath on your door yet?
(Mercy, what will the neighbors think?)
Well, that's okay. We *won't* judge.
CAM does, however, give us at TekTrendz an important opportunity each year to remind our local business community that...
- ...cyberattacks are a ***really big and expensive*** problem...
- ...that impacts businesses in NWA every single day...
- ...with lasting consequences for the company.
But there's also good news to share this October: businesses *can* fight back.
They can stop being soft targets.
They can "*Be Hard to Hack*" — our 2026 CAM tagline here at TekTrendz.
Start Here: 4 Basic Cybersecurity Steps for Every NWA Business
It's a bit ironic. Businesses painstakingly lock doors, set alarms, and install cameras to protect their physical assets from local criminals, yet many of these same businesses leave their networks wide open.
Not just to a few neighborhood criminals but to well-organized, sophisticated criminal enterprises all around the world. Lots of protection for replaceable physical assets; little protection for often irreplaceable digital ones.
Right now, during Cybersecurity Awareness Month, is a great time to change that.
Start with the four basic steps in this slideshow. They're game-changers.

Just four steps for a strong start to cybersecurity:
- Teach employees to avoid phishing scams
- Create strong passwords (or, better yet, use passkeys)
- Use multi-factor authentication
- Update software regularly
Naturally, there's more to cybersecurity than four steps. Because cybercriminals are constantly innovating new tactics, we have to constantly innovate (and adopt) new safeguards. It's the ultimate cat and mouse game. With very high stakes.
However, if every business in Northwest Arkansas and across the country got serious about just these four steps, the FBI's Internet Crime Report next year would look very different.
All of a sudden, businesses everywhere would become — say it with me — *hard to hack*.
